WSOC: Cougars score first goal in snowy draw with Alberta Pandas

Box Score CALGARY - Snow covered Mount Royal stadium field as the Cougars scored the first goal of their season against the Alberta Pandas on Saturday. Both teams had chances to win the match but after 90 minutes of play in less than ideal weather the score was a 1-1 tie.

Miah Godek would get her first start of the season in net for the Cougars while Ashley Turner was in net for the Pandas. Pandas forward Brenna Mattiello had a few opportunities in the game sending one over the bar midway through the first half.

The Cougars were awarded a free kick in the 41stminute but the ball was sent wide from just outside the corner of the box. After 45 minutes of play the score was all tied up at zero.

The Ladies came back to a much cleaner pitch in the second half thanks to the efforts of the gameday staff. Jullien Ramirez had a good opportunity in the early minutes but was stymied by Turner. Minutes later the Pandas crossed the ball over the Cougars crease and the outstretched hands of Godek. Alexi Watson played hero on this one getting back to the far post and making a huge block for what would have been a sure goal.

A free kick from just outside the box offered the Pandas a great opportunity to strike first but Godek was able to get in front of the ball and deflect it wide. The Pandas would strike first on a penalty kick after the ball was blocked by a Cougar defender's arm inside the box.

The Cougars first goal of the season came in the 82ndminute off a free kick near the corner. Athena Fourlas curved the ball towards the net and it bounced off a Panda in the crowd and found the back of the net. Not one minute later the Pandas had another free kick from outside the box. The initial attempt went off the wall of Cougars defenders but then the ball was crossed in front offering a great chance for the Pandas to retake the lead. In comes Miah Godek making a massive sliding stop to keep the score tied.

The Cougars host the Macewan Griffins Sunday while the Alberta Pandas head to Lethbridge to take on the Pronghorns.
