Calgary, AB â€" The Cougars upset the top â€"ranked team in Canada West as they defeated the UBC Thunderbirds 3-1 (25-18, 26-24, 24-26, 25-17) tonight at Kenyon Court.Â
Carolyn O'Dwyer led all players in scoring with 19 points followed by
Julia Pasieka with 15. Rosie Shlagintweit scored 15.5 for the Thunderbirds.
The Cougars were not to be intimidated by the top-seeded Thunderbirds. The two teams held nothing back at the beginning, swinging freely early. The Cougar's defense then rose to the occasion getting to every ball and gave their offense as chance to win it. The offense did just that, as they went on a tear and took the set 25-18.
The first set seemed to wake up the Thunderbirds. UBC went crazy off their serve and opened up a sizeable lead on the Cougars. UBC looked to have the game in hand then the Cougars went on a massive run. They fought off five set points and tied the game at 24. The Cougars then calmly stepped up and won the next two points to take win 26-24 and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
It looked like the Cougars had it all wrapped up asthey played with the confidence that got them into the semi-finals last season. UBC then showed why they are number one, coming back hard tie the match up. This one went right down to the wire but the Thunderbirds pulled it out and won 26-24 forcing another set.
In the fourth and final set the Cougars weren't going to be stopped. They smashed every ball that came their way and played impenetrable defense.
Carolyn O'Dwyer, the sophomore, looked like a seasoned veteran and led the Cougars to 25-17 set win and a 3-1 match victory.
The Cougars move to 6-11 with the win and UBC drops to 15-2.
These two teams will play the rubber match tomorrow evening at 6:30pm on Kenyon Court.Â
