Friday, October 26, 2012 – Calgary, AB...The Mount Royal Cougars got exactly the start they hoped for while the Calgary Dinos battled inconsistency throughout the night as the newcomer Cougars earned a 3-1 (25-22, 16-25, 25-23, 25-15) win in their first-ever Canada West women's volleyball match Friday night in the Jack Simpson Gym.
The Cougars bounced back from a dominant 25-16 performance by the Dinos in the second set to win the third tightly at 25-23, then took the fourth going away 25-15 to make history with the program's first win in CIS competition.
Carolyn O'Dwyer led the way for the Cougars with 17 kills on the night, with
Julia Pasieka adding 13,
Olivia Grecu 11, and
Fallon Middlemiss 10. Middlemiss and O'Dwyer got into the act defensively for the Cougars as well with 11 and 10 kills each, respectively, while libero
Tayler Smith led the way with 14 defensive efforts.
On the Dinos' side, the fifth-year tandem of Lindsey Doland and Sarah Moncks each put up 11 kills, while middle Courtney Dawson was also effective when she saw the ball, scoring nine kills and getting in on six blocks. Freshman libero Morgan Dale's 15-dig effort led all players in the match, while Moncks added 13.
Calgary managed to out-block Mount Royal by a significant 14-6 margin, but the Cougars had a wide disparity in total kills on the night with 61 compared to the Dinos' 44.
With the victory, the Cougars (1-0) give Mount Royal University its first lead in the Crowchild Classic rivalry series with two wins, one loss, and two ties heading into Saturday night's volleyball rematches down the road. Kenyon Court hosts festivities, with the men's first serve slated for 6 p.m. followed by a scheduled 7:30 start for the women.
