The Mount Royal University Huskies are taking on the University of Saskatchewan Huskies in their Halloween home opener.
Throughout the first half the Cougars and Huskies were up and down the court. Dylan Miller got the first points of the game for the Huskies, by laying out a three-point shot to take the initial lead.
While the teams are generating offence through out, while taking advantage of missed shots both teams are getting the rebounds and trying to capitalize on the other teams misses.
The Huskies take a 5-0 lead with a lay up made by Easton Thimm, the Cougars got on the board with a
DJ Roberts lay up. Miller got another three up and the Huskies still lead. After a Huskies foul,
Jacob McLellan put up two good free throws, and the period is tied 8-8 now.
Miller laid out another three-pointer to take the 11-8 lead for the Cougars.
The Cougars lead after the first quarter by a differential of three. Miller had a total of nine points for the Huskies, while on the Cougars side the points were scattered throughout the lineup with
Jose Miguel Alba Gabaldon having four points.
The Cougars got a bigger lead after two
Jean-Nelson Pigoue free throws were cashed in, and then a lay up, taking the lead 21-14 in the third quarter. After getting a steal Roberts got up the layup, and the Cougars lead by nine.
Dillyn Morin, Emmanuel Bonsu, and Mohamed Mahadhi try to generate as much offence as they can for the Huskies to make a come back. The Cougars are still able to go away with the lead after the second quarter the had the lead by three points, at 32-29.
With the Cougars leading by three points the Huskies come out ready to go as they got the score within one quickly off the start of the quarter. Cougars kept attacking, as they lead 36-33.
After he got a takeaway Emmanuel Bonsu, he gets the lay up for the Huskies to take the lead, 37-36. Treyvon Folkes gets up a shot from under the basket, making the score 42-41 ad the Cougars keep the lead.
Cougars answered back with two three-pointers from
Desmond Ducheck, taking the lead 48-41. McLellan and
Kuach Gajak help get the Cougars the bigger lead, 55-43. Cougars take the 15-point lead after both free throws are cashed in by Roberts.
Mahadhi charged the net for the Huskies, gets a hard pass to Thimm, and they lay it up, as they trail 58-45. Â The Huskies tried to make a last push in the final seconds of the third quarter, but cannot capitalize, after the third quarter the Cougars hold the lead at 58-45.
For the Huskies, Miller, Bonsu and Thimm are leading in points through three quarters, while on the Cougars side Gajak,
Kole Scott, McLellean and Ducheck lead in points.
Morin got two threes up in a row for the Huskies and they trail by nine. As Gajak sprinted down the court, he sends a quick pass to
Daniel Owoeye and he laid it up, to keep the lead at 67-53. McLellan put a three away, as the Cougars lead 72-55.
With one minute to go in the game, the Huskies take a timeout, to get the plays going. As the Huskies apply the pressure, they force the Cougars out of bounds, still trailing by 12 the Huskies try to generate something. The Huskies score two in the last few seconds, but it's not enough as the Cougars win 78-62 in their home opener.
The Cougars look for the sweep as they take on the Huskies again at Kenyon Court on Saturday night.
