MRU Men's Soccer named to U SPORTS Top 10 - Sept 5, 2023

The Mount Royal University men's soccer team enjoyed two wins during Labour Day weekend and secured a spot in the U SPORTS top ten rankings for the week. Cougars head coach Ryan Gyaki's squad ranks seventh in the country after a trio of 1-0 wins over three Canada West rivals.

Mount Royal opened the season with a narrow victory against their crosstown counterpart, the University of Calgary Dinos. Abel Nesibu scored in the 87th minute and his goal proved to be the winner.

Following the opening game win, the Cougars headed south to take on the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns. Fifth-year forward, David Schaefer scored the game's only goal after putting in his own rebound from a saved penalty kick.

The Cougars had a quick turnaround from their win over the Pronghorns and made their way to Saskatchewan to take on the Huskies on Sunday. Despite a delayed start and the match having to be called early due to smoky skies and poor air quality, MRU brought home their third straight 1-0 win, led by a terrific performance from rookie goalkeeper, Aidan Dumoulin.

The seventh-ranked Cougars welcome a pair of neighbours up Highway 2 for two games this coming weekend. Mount Royal will take on the MacEwan University Griffins in their home opener on Saturday, September 9 at 1 p.m. at Stadium Field. MRU will also host the University of Alberta Pandas on Sunday, September 10 at 3 p.m. Fans can catch the action in person or live on Canada West TV.
