Donaghy earns Canada West Second Team All-Star honours

EDMONTON – A total of five players in their first or second year of eligibility were honoured as 2017-18 Canada West women's volleyball all-stars Tuesday, as the conference's youth movement in the sport was on full display.

Fifth-year Alex Donaghy had a stellar year for the Cougars in her final season. She led the team in kills with 326 this season, good for seventh in the conference. Her 3.58 kills per set puts her in the top five in Canada West. Donaghy also led Mount Royal in digs with 246, averaging 2.70 per set. The right side hitter came in third in the league in service aces with 52 in a total of 91 sets.

The conference first team features one second-year player with Alberta's Kory White, who is joined by UBC rookie Kiera Van Ryk – the lone first-year athlete on either all-star team.

On the CW second all-star team, Manitoba's Kearley Abbott, Trinity Western's Hilary Howe, and Regina's Satomi Togawa are all in their second year of eligibility.

Having five players in their first or second years named all-stars stands in stark contrast to last season's teams, when then third-year Nikala Majewski – a second team all-star this year for a second straight season – was the lone all-star not in her fourth or fifth season.

2016-17 saw a total of eight fifth-year players named all-stars, while this season there were only four players in their final year of eligibility named all-stars.

Along with the conference all-star teams, which featured players from nine of CW's 13 volleyball members, seven players were acknowledged as all-rookies for their outstanding freshmen seasons.

Leading the charge among rookies was Van Ryk, who as noted earlier was also a first team all-star. The Surrey, B.C. product was outstanding for the UBC Thunderbirds, finishing second in conference kills with 352.

NOTE: The CW all-stars and all-rookies were selected by the conference's 13 women's volleyball head coaches.
