Wesmen fall to Cougars in three

The Mount Royal University Cougars opened up their weekend series against the University of Winnipeg Wesmen posting a 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-18) victory at the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium in Winnipeg Friday evening.

With the win the Cougars improve their record to 11-12 and on the cusp of clinching a playoff spot. Winnipeg with the loss falls to 2-21 in regular season play.

Alex Donaghy led the Cougars with 11 kills. Kylie Willis was next with seven. Taylor Pelland and Maddi Quinn led the Cougars in digs with eight each. Carly Davies served up three service aces.

Danika Picklyk and Karissa Kuhr led the Wesmen with eight kills each. Alex Rose added seven. Libero Madison Fyvie led the Wesmen in digs with a match high 15.

The Cougars led 16-10 at the technical break of the opening set and extended their lead to 23-16 when Winnipeg made their move. A 5-0 Wesmen run cut the Cougars lead to 23-21 but kills by Carly Davies and Alex Donaghy closed out the set by a score of 25-21.

In the second set Winnipeg gained the early momentum leading 16-14 at the technical timeout. The teams battled to 18-18 when the Cougars took control of the set scoring six unanswered points to take a 24-18 lead before eventually winning the set 25-19.

The third set was almost a carbon copy of the previous set. Winnipeg took a 16-14 lead into the timeout only to see the Cougars score seven points in a row soon after to win the set 25-18.

Mount Royal had 11 service aces in the match, Winnipeg finished with a pair.

The two teams will wrap up regular season play in the late game on Saturday with a 7:30 p.m. start time scheduled.
