CALGARY- The Brandon Bobcats (13-9) improved their playoff position on Saturday evening on Kenyon Court, defeating the Mount Royal Cougars (10-10) in 5 sets (22-25, 25-23, 25-20, 18-25, 15-7)
Roy Ching and Matt Powell were a force to be reckoned with in the contest, registering 21 and 14 kills respectively.
Mount Royal was able to take the early lead over Brandon in a back and fourth first set, jumping ahead 12-8 with three kills from Tyler Schmidt.
With the Cougars up 22-19, Roy Ching would make his sixth kill of the set, forcing a Mount Royal timeout in an attempt to regain their composure.
Matt Powell would then make a kill followed by a Tyler Schmidt attacking error to knot the game up at 22.
Scott Gieski would quickly get the Cougars their lead back, pounding a perfectly set up ball from Samuel Brisbane down into the court. Moments later Quinn Bromley would make a kill to give the Cougars a set point.
Josh Kirkham would make his third kill of the evening on the following point, giving the Cougars a 25-22 first set victory.
Neither team was able to solidify a strong lead in the first half of the second set, with both squads exchanging blows en-rout to a 12-12 stalemate.
Brandon would break out of the deadlock with four unanswered points, with Ching making his team leading 10th kill of the match in the process.
A few points later Schmidt would make yet another kill, giving the Cougars a 22-21 lead.
The Bobcats weren't going away, with Mason Metcalf and Matt Powell making kills on back-to-back points to put the visiting squad back up 23-22.
A few points later Powell would make his ninth kill of the match, winning the second set for Brandon in the process, 25-23.
Mount Royal jumped ahead to a quick 5-1 lead to start the third set with a few kills from Riley Friesen. However the Cougars began playing sloppy and made more than a few unforced errors, allowing the Bobcats to gain a 17-14 lead.
Brandon would keep their lead for the rest of the set, taking it 25-20 to get within a single set of a weekend sweep.
The Bobcats continued their strong play into the fourth set, leading for most of the first half before a valiant effort by the Cougars locked the set back at 11.
Rallying back into the game, Quinn Bromley would make a huge kill to put the Cougars up 16-14, leading to a Bobcats timeout.
Mount Royal picked up where they left off after the timeout, dictating play and forcing Bobcat mistakes. With all the momentum, the Cougars led by a wide 22-17 margin. Winning three out of the next four points, the Cougars took the set 25-18.
The Bobcats dominated in the deciding set, taking a 6-1 lead behind a few kills from Ching as well as two unforced Cougars' errors.
The Cougars failed to get anything going offensively in the set, falling victim to the Bobcats front court presence of Ching and Powell. Before long the Bobcats took the set, 15-7.
The Cougars will be back in action next weekend hosting Saskatchewan while the Bobcats will get some rest as they have their bye week ahead of them.
