CALGARY- The Mount Royal Cougars (10-6) took down the MacEwan Griffins (2-16) in a five set marathon Saturday evening on Kenyon Court (18-25, 25-17, 20-25, 25-20, 15-4).

Riley Friesen made 20 kills in one of his best performances of the season while Tyler Schmidt pitched in with 16 kills. Josh Kirkham converted 11 out of 13 kill attempts for a 85% hitting percentage.

Looking to avenge the previous nights loss, the Griffins started the first set on fire. Converting on a few Cougars mistakes, the visitors took a quick 16-10 lead, forcing Mount Royal to take their first timeout.

Mount Royal failed to play their game in the set, making plenty of sloppy errors. Kai Hesthammer took advantage of the Cougars off set; sending four kills past defenders and leading his team to a 25-18 first set victory.

The second set was controlled by the Cougars net front presence. Midway through the set Josh Kirkham had converted an astounding six of his seven kill attempts, helping the Cougars jump out to a 16-10 lead.

Mount Royal would continue to roll for the rest of the set, dominating play on their way to a 25-17 win.

The two squads played their first evenly played set in the third, with the teams exchanging blows en-route to a 12-12 deadlock and the sets' first timeout.

The Griffins would come out of the timeout strong, winning eight out of the next 11 points to take a 20-15 lead. Serving proved to be a nemesis for the Cougars, making their 15th service fault in the set.

The Griffins would take the set a few minutes later as Shane Kerrison hammered his seventh kill of the game into the court, giving MacEwan a 25-20 third set win.

Much like the second set, Mount Royal answered in the fourth. Riley Friesen stood out as the Cougars' MVP in the set, making his 15th kill in the set to put his team up 17-12. The Cougars would eventually win the set 25-20.

Riley Friesen would start the fifth set off with a bang, making two straight kills to give the Cougars a quick 2-0 lead. A Tyler Schmidt kill would put Mount Royal up 3-0 moments later, leading to an early MacEwan timeout.

Out of the switch Tyler Schmidt would make a huge block at the net, putting the Cougars up 9-3. A few points later Sam Brisbane hit a beautiful floating serve that painted the back line to put the Cougars up eight.

Schmidt would seal the deal a few minutes later with his 16th kill of the game to give the Cougars a dominating 15-4 fifth set victory.

Mount Royal will head north to Edmonton next weekend for a set against the University of Alberta. Meanwhile, MacEwan will travel to Regina for a few games against the Cougars.
