CALGARY- The 9-0 Trinity Western Spartans remained undefeated on the season Friday evening on Kenyon Court, cruising to a straight set victory against the 6-3 Mount Royal Cougars (25-18, 25-15, 25-21).

Ryan Sclater was the best player on the court all night long, making 13 kills as well as showing off his service abilities, hitting three aces. Meanwhile the Spartans held the Cougars best players in check, not allowing double-digit points for any player.

In their nine games this season the Spartans have dropped a total of five sets, good for best in the Canada West Conference.

The game between the first and third seed in the Canada West standings began much like expected with lots of back and fourth battles. However early on it was the Spartans who had the upper hand, jumping ahead to a 15-12 lead.

Mount Royal failed to provide an answer late in the set for the Spartans, especially Ryan Sclater, who made five kills in the 25-18 first set victory.

The Spartans, who have only dropped five sets thus far this season, continued to dominate in the second set. Winning the battles above the net, the Spartans raced out to a 19-12 lead.

Continuing their control of the game, Jacob Kern sealed the deal with a kill to win the second set 25-15.

The third set proved to be highly competitive early, as both teams traded points on their way to a 8-8 score. However, once again the Spartans began pulling away as Eric Loeppky dominated the service line, making his third ace of the game to make the score 13-9.

Thanks to back-to-back kills from Quinn Bromley, the Cougars were able to even the match at 17. However it was all for not as the Spartans won eight of the last 12 points for a 25-21 third set win.

The two teams will play the second of their two game set on Saturday evening at 6 P.M. on Kenyon Court.
