Two Mount Royal Cougars men's soccer players have been recognized by the league. Wonderkid Moe El Gandour has been named to the 2018 Canada West All-Rookie team, additionally, he joins teammate Daniel Harrison on the Second Team All-Stars.
El Gandour's first weekend as a Cougar was a memorable one as he was involved in four out of the six goals in Mount Royal's two opening wins. The Bissett School of Business student finished the season with two goals and four assists for a total of six points, which co-led the team. It's the highest point total a Mount Royal rookie has put up since 2016 and El Gandour becomes just the third rookie alongside Cody Cook (2012), and Orest Ndabaneze (2017) to lead the team in points.
Head Coach Ryan Gyaki spoke on El Gandour dynamism and the high ceiling that he has, "Moe brings pace and excitement to the game that not a lot of players can do; the league is lucky to have him. We're really excited to see him next year and when that guy is in his fifth year he's going to be an even more dynamic player and will help us a lot."
Captain Daniel Harrison followed in the footsteps of his predecessor and mentor Jeff Blake in becoming a 2018 Second Team All-Star just one year after Blake was one himself. Harrison was the Cougars' main centre-back and held down the fort all season long despite nearly the entire back line around him going down with injuries throughout the season. This season he led the team in every defensive statistic category and the cherry on top, as Harrison is not known traditionally for his goalscoring, is he had a career-high 3 points this season.
Head Coach Ryan Gyaki pointed out that his importance to the team went beyond the analytics, "He's a strong and physical defender, but he's also a tremendous leader, and those are hard to come by." When asked what made Harrison a tremendous leader Gyaki explained that he led by example, "Consistency is more important than performance and with Danny, we know what we're going to get with him. He's going to battle, he's going to be desperate to win, he's going to be the guy who makes the last ditch goal line clearance, he's the guy you can count on for a big clearance and you can just simply count on him."
