Under Armour & Players Bench Athletes of the Week, Feb. 20-26, 2019

CALGARY – Two bigtime volleyball players performers have been selected as the Under Armour & Players Bench Athletes of the Week for the week of February 20-26, 2019.

Both of Mount Royal's volleyball team's took to the court this past weekend for their respective quarter-final series. On the women's side, Mount Royal travelled to Langley, BC to take on Trinity Western. MRU came in as the underdog ranked seventh in the conference, while Trinity was second. The Cougars battled for an upset led by the inspiring play of second-year Haley Roe.

Thursday night, MRU had a slow start dropping the first two sets. Roe then rallied the troops to push the match to five sets with 10 crucial kills. The game was back and forth with both teams looking to take the lead in the series. The Cougars fell just short despite Roe's team-leading four aces.

TWU then closed out the series on Friday night with a 3-0 victory. Even though this is the end of the MRU season, they fought hard and had a great year. Roe and her teammates showed the Cougars strength of depth and culture that they will build on next year.

Roe hails from Airdrie, AB and is studying a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice.

While the women's team travelled to BC the men stayed put, hosting the Saskatchewan Huskies in the first-ever playoff series at Kenyon Court since the Cougars entered U SPORTS.

Tyler Schmidt was the difference maker in the Canada West quarter-final between number four ranked Mount Royal and number five ranked Saskatchewan. He was in a league of his own finishing with a match-high 37 kills and 44.5 points.

The Cougars had a dominant performance on Friday night, taking the night in straight sets. Saturday was much tougher as Saskatchewan battled back, however they were no match for the MRU opposite. He was unstoppable, tallying 25 kills in four sets.

The weekend before, Schmidt chiselled his way into the conference history. He became the Canada West all-time points and kills leader. This is an outstanding accomplishment for the Mount Royal program.

The Cougars now move into the Canada West semi-finals for the first time in program history. They will play the number one ranked Bobcats in Brandon this weekend starting Thursday, February 28th at 6:00 PM MST. This will be a best two-out-of-three series and the winner will move on to the Canada West finals and qualify for the National Championships in Laval, Quebec.
