Mount Royal honours 68 Academic All-Canadians

CALGARY, AB - It was a special morning at Mount Royal University as Cougars Athletics and Recreation hosted their annual Academic All-Canadian Awards breakfast, presented by Enterprise Rent-A-Car. A total of 68 student-athletes from the 2017-18 season were recognized with the prestigious distinction.

To earn this honour, U SPORTS student-athletes must maintain an average of 80 per cent or better, while competing on a varsity team and enrolled as a full-time student.

"This award acknowledges the work that student-athletes do in the classroom and brings into focus our first priorities of academics," said Cougars Athletics and Recreation Director Karla Karch. "We are extremely proud of our student-athletes and the time commitment it takes to excel in all areas, including in the classroom, athletics and in the community."

Diving into the specific teams, women's soccer led the way with 19 Academic All-Canadians followed by women's hockey with 13, men's hockey with nine, men's volleyball and women's basketball with seven, women's volleyball with six, men's soccer with four, and men's basketball with three.

Women's soccer Head Coach Tino Fusco took pride in his team's growing number of Academic All-Canadians. "We bring players here that want to be student-athletes," said Fusco. "For example, I just got a note from one of my graduating players that she just got accepted into her masters in Sheffield, England so as a coach that's all you want. It's exciting when they take off and spread their wings."

In terms of academics, the Faculty of Health, Community and Education led the way with 24 student-athletes earning the honours. The Faculty of Business and Communications Studies had 20, while the Faculty of Arts had 13 and the Faculty of Science and Technology had nine.
