CALGARY - One goaltender and one goalscorer have been selected as the Under Armour & Players Bench Athletes of the Week for the week of Oct. 24-30.
It was an emotional rollercoaster Thursday night in Langley, BC for Mount Royal's women's soccer team as they played UFV in the Canada West quarterfinals.
Natalie De Marco, as she often does, had a fantastic game. The Canberra, Australia native played the entire game 150 minutes and took one of the penalty kicks in the shootout. With the Cougars trailing 1-0 De Marco showed great composure to bring down a cross in the box; with her back to goal, she calmly passed it to Erin Holt who scored the equalizing goal. In the penalty shootout, De Marco buried her shot into the right side of the net but it wasn't enough as the Cougars ultimately fell 4-3 in the shootout and 2-1 in the game, bringing their season to a close.
The Cougar's men's hockey team were in fine form this past weekend, beating Manitoba twice by a combined score of 10-3. Despite there being seven Cougars, who found the back of the net at least once, it may come as a surprise to some that it was the goaltender who shone the brightest at the FCA this past weekend.
Graduating goalie Colin Cooper continued his outstanding play to begin the season as he stopped 22/23 shots on Friday night in a 6-1 win and stopped 17/19 to complete the sweep Saturday in a 4-2 win. He also backstopped the MRU penalty kill unit by holding the Bisons scoreless on 5 power play attempts, including a lengthy 5 on 3 kill Friday night. For the weekend Colin ended up with a. 929 SV% and a 2.01 GAA. He currently sits near the top of the conference in all goaltending statistics.
Cooper and the Cougars will next play a home and home with the Calgary Dinos hosting them November 9, 2018 and playing on the road the following day.
