Three recruits join Cougars, including ACAC Player of the Year

CALGARY – The Mount Royal Cougars men's volleyball team is pleased to announce the signings of three more recruits to the program. Trent Mounter, Mitchel Gorman and Joao Freire will join MRU for the 2018-19 season.

Mounter, a transfer from SAIT, comes off a CCAA season named the ACAC Player of the Year and a CCAA All-Canadian. Leading the ACAC as a left side in points per set (4.6), kills per set (3.62), and aces per set (0.66), the Cougars are excited that the Australia native, a truly complete player, will be joining the team next season.

"Trent is going to be a strong addition to our team," said MRU head coach Shawn Sky. "He's a physical passing leftside with a wealth of game experience. His coaches and teammates speak incredibly highly of him from a character and work ethic standpoint."

Another addition to the men's volleyball program is Mitchel Gorman who will be entering the season as a true rookie. The Grande Prairie native was a member of the U17 Team Alberta Provincial Team and has great ball control and a wide array of offensive shots, as well as the skill set and mental game to play both libero and left side.

"We are thrilled with Mitch's decision to come to MRU," said Sky. "We love his versatility, athleticism, leadership and passion for the game. He competes hard and plays with confidence and control. I think he's going to thrive here at MRU."

Last, but not least, is Joao Freire hailing from Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The 6'5'' left side is athletic with a significant upside and played in the ACAC with the Medicine Hat Rattlers. In the 2017-18 season, Freire recorded 2.35 kills per set and 3 points per set.

"Joao is a tremendous addition to our program," said Sky. "We are excited to work with him and help him grow his game. We watched Joao throughout the ACAC season and think his game will readily transfer to Canada West. He's a physical player that competes and plays with joy. He's a very charismatic, hardworking individual that will have a positive impact on our team's culture."

Mounter, Gorman and Freire join Luis Lange, announced in October, as the team's recruiting class for the 2018-19 season. The Canada West men's volleyball schedule is set to be released in June.
